Finally some sense from Jack Schofield at The Guardian

Quite why anybody's bothered about Windows 7 at this stage remains a mystery. Nobody knows what it will be like, except that it's based on Vista, with all the same plumbing, not on XP.

Peace. Why people spend so much time trying to find out what’s coming next is beyond me. Okay so people like to get the scoop but really does anyone care *that* much about a product that is quite a way off? I have access to a tonne of information inside Microsoft using our corporate intranet search but how many times have a I searched for details on Windows 7? Precisely zero. I just have better things to do. Doesn’t everyone else?

Is this fairdinkum? - Adding Page Numbers to Google Documents

webDotWiz came across this just a few minutes ago on the Google Operating System blog which is:

An unofficial blog that watches Google's latest attempts to move your operating system online.

Here's what you're advised to do:

Google finally realized that the headers and footers from Google Docs have almost no real use, as you can't add dynamic information like page numbers or the current date. Until Google adds these options in the interface, you can edit the document's HTML code to use them. To add a header that displays "Page (current page number) of (total number of pages)" , click on "Edit HTML" and add this code at the beginning of the document:
<div style="text-align: right;" class="google_header">Page <span class="google_pagenumber">1</span> of <span class="google_pagecount">1</span></div>
When you save the document as a PDF, the header will look like this:

For footers, you should add this at the bottom of the document, in HTML view:
<div style="text-align: right;" class="google_footer" id="google_footer">Page <span class="google_pagenumber">1</span> of <span class="google_pagecount">1</span></div>
It's a good idea to go back to the rich text editor quickly if you don't want to see the horrible code generated by Google Docs. The "dynamic" headers and footers are visible only if you export the document to PDF, for example to print it.

Is the ordinary person who wants to use a straightforward feature of any wordprocessor that's been around since Word 1.0 expected to use HTML view to get page numbering working in Google Docs?

As someone who helps out people with their computing skills, webDotWiz can only roll his eyes, shake his head in wonderment and then stare blankly at the wall at this sort of stuff. He wouldn't dare show his webDotWizards this sort of stuff - he'd been greeted with howls of derision and more if he even attempted to do so. Anyway, he'd much rather have the webDotWizards so something useful.

Dare is a member of the Windows Live Team and works on how Windows Live users can responsibly be connected with friends. This is his conclusion to a couple of articles he's written about my data is not your data (to use his words).

Note that webDotWiz has added emphasis to Dare's last sentence below.

Lots of geeks have focused on the fact that since it was possible for Robert to manually extract this data, then then people sharing data with him shouldn't complain since they gave him access to the data. This ignores the fact that just because something is technically possible doesn't make it right even if it is legal. Just because it is technically possible for you to read the RSS feed for my blog and republish it on a splog so you can make money from AdSense ads doesn't make it right. Just because it is technically possible for you to view my photo albums on Windows Live Spaces doesn't mean I'd think it was OK to use Omar's Send to Smugmug script to republish these photos on Smugmug. Just because you have my phone number doesn't mean I think it is OK for you to share it with all your drinking buddies that want to work at Microsoft and need a recommendation. And so on...
In all of these cases, there the social contract between us would have been broken. This is independent of whether it's technically possible for you to do these things by hand without needing a script or whatever.
Taking my data and sharing it with a third party without my permission isn't cool. Just because I shared information with you doesn't give you the right to share it with others.
